US Border Crisis: Justin Trudeau Reaffirms Canada’s Commitment to Refugees

World leaders in growing numbers are speaking out against Donald Trump’s “extreme vetting” immigration policy, which has already seen tens of thousands of people take to the streets in protests against the measures. The latest being Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who rather than criticize Trump directly has instead re-affirmed the commitment of the Canadian government to “those fleeing persecution, terror & war.”

Trudeau has so far been careful not to lash out at the Trump Administration directly, having instead focused on the building and strengthening of important ties between the two nations.  Nevertheless, a series of Tweets posted by Trudeau over the past 24 hours represent a direct response and reaction to Trump’s newly-imposed measures, which have caused chaos at airports up and down the country.

Overnight, ‘Welcome to Canada’ was trending both nationally and internationally, as hundreds remained stranded at US airports.

Friday afternoon saw Trump sign an executive order which immediately closed US border to immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim nations. Even those who hold permanent legal residency in the United States and carry green cards are being refused re-entry – despite many having been abroad temporarily for business or vacation purposes.

Re-iterating the country’s more welcoming and proactive approach to immigration, Trudeau accompanied one of his Tweets with a famous image from 2015, in which he can be seen greeting a young refugee seeking asylum after fleeing Syria.

The Canadian government has also expressed concern with regard to how its own citizens may be barred entry to the United States while the current measures are in place.
