Nexus Player gets pulled from Google Play Store

Originally, the Nexus Player sold for $100, which wasn’t such a steep price to pay – in fact, Google’s first Android TV endeavor cost as much as an Apple TV. However, that was the only thing it specialized in – Android TV – and making the Player work to its full potential required the purchase of one expensive peripheral, namely its controller. It was also quite lacking in terms of storage (8GB), and didn’t have much of a remote control to speak of.

Given the Nexus Player’s myriad weaknesses, it’s safe to say that the device is not going to be missed now that it’s gone from the Play Store. Of course, it doesn’t have a follow-up or replacement device yet, but buyers have some non-Google alternatives, including the NVIDIA SHIELD, as well as the Xiaomi Mi Box, which is currently listed as “Coming Soon.”

Those still interested in the Player can buy it on eBay, where it sells for $129.99 as a “Buy it Now” item, or wait until someone sells it at a bargain-basement price; last fall, Newegg did sell the Nexus Player for only $40 on its official eBay page.
