Ancient solar flares could have helped bring life to Earth

“We know that life started on Earth about four billion years ago, but the fundamental question is … why four billion years ago?,” said study co-author Vladimir Airapetian in an interview with Mashable. Could life have started one billion years ago, two billion years ago, (or) three billion years ago? Is there anything special about four billion years ago?”

Airapetian and colleagues based their findings on data from the Kepler Space Telescope, discovering that so-called “superflares” emerging from a very young Sun may have been responsible for facilitating life on Earth and allowing it to grow. But while the solar flares were bigger and more powerful, the researchers stressed that the sun in its early days wasn’t as bright as it is today.

But why four billion years ago, as Airapetian asked? He believes that this may be because of the superflares that emerged from the Sun and hit Earth at that time period. These flares may have helped keep the Earth warm, possibly producing the chemical balance required to sustain life. However, this wouldn’t have been possible if our Sun wasn’t so dim in comparison to present times.

Still, that brings up a conundrum known as the “young sun paradox,” which is essentially the mystery of why Earth wasn’t in a complete and permanent ice age if our Sun was so dim. But Airapetian and his fellow researchers attribute this to the stormy nature of the young Sun, with the high volume of flares making up for the lack of energy. That could have also been responsible for making liquid water more available, the researchers add.
