Marlins, Pirates express concern on Zika ahead of Puerto Rico series

The Miami Marlins and the Pittsburgh Pirates publicly aired out their concerns this week about a two-game series in Puerto Rico in May, due to the ongoing Zika outbreak.

So far, it seems to be all systems go, as Major League Baseball, the Marlins, and the Pirates all expect the games to take place on May 30 to 31. But there are still myriad concerns about the Zika virus, as the teams, MLB, and the players’ union are still mulling over their next course of action. Quotes from MLB Players Association (MLBPA) head Tony Clark suggest that these safety- and health-related concerns are “serious” ones, while MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was quoted as saying the league and the union are working closely to resolve the issues.

“We recognize the importance of the trip,” said Marlins pitcher Craig Breslow. “But at the same time, our health and the health of our families is paramount.” He cited the U.S. government’s guidelines that suggest couples trying to get pregnant wait six months before doing so, should the man have been diagnosed with Zika after staying in an outbreak area.

“There are guys who are uncomfortable engaging in the lifestyle changes being recommended by the CDC,” he continued. “I’m not sure that’s fair to ask of 20- to 30-year-old men who are potentially looking to start families or expand families.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other worldwide health agencies, have warned about the threat of microcephaly, a birth defect that causes infants to be born with unusually tiny heads. The CDC stresses that the Zika virus is caused by mosquito bites, and can be spread via sexual intercourse. And since Zika lasts longer in semen than in the bloodstream, the CDC also warns men to use condoms or abstain from sex if infected while his partner is pregnant.

In a prepared statement, Marlins president David Samson said that the team, the MLB, and the players’ union are all in agreement that the threat of Zika is a real one, and that coordination with government agencies like the CDC is important to ensure everything goes smoothly.

“We’re all aligned on this to make sure that the safety of the players, the staff and the fans is always paramount,” read Samson’s statement. “I’m completely confident MLB and the MLBPA will work together with the CDC and any other required parties to ensure all of our safety.”
